About The Science Behind BeTuned

At BeTuned, we have adapted principles from neuroscience and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy to create simple, accessible tools for everyday mental wellness and emotional regulation.

What are EMDR and AIP?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro and delivered by trained clinicians using a structured, multi-phase protocol in clinical settings.

AIP (Adaptive Information Processing) is the theoretical model that underpins EMDR, and describes how experiences are processed and can become stuck after a highly stressful event.

BeTuned’s game mechanics are inspired by EMDR and AIP principles, but do not deliver EMDR therapy.

EMDR’s Clinical Recognition

In clinical settings, EMDR therapy helps you break free from the intense emotions, negative beliefs, and physical sensations that trauma leaves behind. It uses bilateral stimulation – eye movements, sounds, or taps – to help the body process stress and trauma, allowing you to safely and supportively reprocess traumatic memories and reduce their emotional impact, under the guidance of a trained therapist.

EMDR therapy is recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) as an effective treatment for trauma, PTSD and other mental health conditions, including:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Panic disorders

  • Phobias

  • Grief

  • Substance use disorders

  • Self-esteem issues

  • Performance anxiety

  • Psychological distress from chronic health issues

More examples where EMDR therapy, when delivered by trained clinicians in therapeutic settings, has gained widespread recognition for its effectiveness in treating trauma and PTSD include:

  • In 2021, Prince Harry underwent a live EMDR session on camera, showcasing its effectiveness in a documentary for Apple TV. He described EMDR as the method he used to overcome trauma and PTSD, especially after the death of his mother.

  • Similarly, actress Sandra Bullock has spoken about how EMDR therapy helped her recover from PTSD following a traumatic incident, highlighting its ability to address both psychological and physical symptoms.

  • WHO's recent publication, "Psychological Interventions Implementation Manual: Integrating Evidence-Based Psychological Interventions into Existing Services," endorses EMDR as a key intervention for treating PTSD in adults, children, and adolescents, underscoring the growing necessity to expand and sustain these interventions on a broader scale.

How BeTuned Differs - Innovative approach

BeTuned adapts principles from traditional EMDR therapy into accessible, engaging game-based play for daily emotional regulation. By incorporating these evidence-based concepts into simple game mechanics, BeTuned offers a unique approach to emotional regulation that’s both science-informed and enjoyable to use.

You have control over your experience - you can adjust the speed to match what feels comfortable, and we’re adding options to customise complexity levels to suit your needs.

Whether used independently for everyday stress. management or as a complement to professional therapy, BeTuned provides immediate access to nervous system reset tools, making emotional regulation support more accessible and reducing the stigma often associated with seeking help.
